It’s not as if Shazleen Khan needs BF’s help in getting the latest volume of the epic series BUUZA!! to its Kickstarter funding target. But this series, bringing the hugely popular webcomic to print, has been one of my absolute favourite self-published endeavours of recent years and it’s always important to use Broken Frontier’s reach to try and persuade potential readers to take a chance on something they have yet to try.
I’ve said of the multiple Broken Frontier Award-winning project in the past that “there’s a profound humanity to BUUZA!! that is a central part of its appeal”, and Khan describes the strip as one that “touches on themes of found family, spirituality, cultural identity, marginalisation and diaspora, featuring a fully QPOC ensemble cast with rich interwoven narratives.”
From the Kickstarter summary: BUUZA!! follows Sam and Zach; two twenty-somethings trying to navigate the sprawling nation of Dawlat al Harir. Along the way they meet Musa, a young man who’s looking for his estranged half-brother; Zhen, the very same estranged sibling who strikes up an unlikely, long distance romance with Zach; and Miriam, the third sibling who’s wrapped up in a political rivalry with the esteemed Oracle, Daeng Aria bin Dariush, the beloved ruler of the country , who also has a mysterious connection with Sam…
Not already a BUUZA!! aficionado? Then trust me when I say it’s the best comic you are not currently reading. You can read an in-depth Shazleen Khan interview here at BF too. And it’s worth mentioning all volumes are available as part of the crowdfunding campaign.
