THOUGHT BUBBLE MONTH 2024! Dark & Golden Books breathe new life into comics ephemera, bringing the esoteric and the forgotten to new audiences. Tom Oldham and Douglas Noble’s wonderful publishing project has no less than three new titles debuting at Thought Bubble this year including work from Dave Gibbons, Kevin Woodcock and a book dedicated comic shop price stickers! Check out our previous coverage of Dark & Golden here.
Early Gigs – Underground Comics 1970-1973 by Dave Gibbons
D&G006
Out of print since their first publication, these are the comics that Dave Gibbons cut his teeth on, honing his abilities on wild stories of rock and rock, spectral appearances, and biased judges. Stories inside include work originally published in Fantasy Advertiser, Trials of Nasty Tales, Rock ‘N’ Roll Madness Funnies, Zip Comics and more, plus the first publication of the story “Need a Fog Set” in its entirety. Newly scanned from the original art, and with brand new introductions for each story by Gibbons himself, this is an invaluable record of some of the earliest work by one of the UK’s greatest comic artists.
A Little Book of Comic Shop Price Stickers
D&G007
Dark & Golden Books are pleased to present our first zine of UK comic ephemera, collecting together some of the most historic and most attractive of the price stickers that UK comic shops have used over the last 50 years. Pocket-sized as a special treat, and with a new introductory essay by our very own Tom Oldham.
Signs of the Times by Kevin Woodcock
D&G010
Signs of the Times collects Kevin Woodcock cartoons that ran in Brain Damage and The Damage comic in 1989 and 1990. Long out of print and massively under-appreciated, the cartoons of Kevin Woodcock are an unnerving trip to a place that is just not quite right. In this new collection of three of his satirical series, he is on especially sharp form – skewering the complacency of 1990’s society in a way that still resonates today. A timeless collection of jet-black comics that you won’t be able to stop thinking about. This is the second in a series bringing this astounding cartoonist back to availability.
Dark & Golden Books are dedicated to charting a less travelled course through the history of British comics, finding and celebrating mislaid and forgotten classics for the audience of today in new high-quality editions.
Douglas Noble/Dark & Golden Books will be at Table B6 in the DSTLRY Hall at Thought Bubble.
Thought Bubble 2024 runs from November 11th-17th with the convention weekend taking place on the 16th-17th. More details on the Thought Bubble site here.
