Nobrow’s 2018 East London Comics & Arts Festival (ELCAF) is on the horizon and the first guest announcements have been released today with the news that this year’s “artist in residence” is Belgian creator Charlotte Dumortier. The main festival runs from June 22nd-24th at The Round Chapel and Old School Rooms. Charlotte’s festival poster is below.
As regular BF readers are aware, ELCAF is a key date in our comics coverage calendar and an event that very much reflects the site’s ethos in terms of the more experimental and boundary-pushing comics and illustration practice it champions. We’ve had involvement with ELCAF since 2015 having chaired panels there every year since, and you can expect significant pre-festival coverage in 2018 with an ELCAF Fortnight of reviews, interviews and features preceding the festival. And with five of our Broken Frontier ‘Six Small Press Creators to Watch in 2018‘ exhibiting at the festival it’s going to be a major focus for us this year!
You can find last year’s ELCAF Week at BF here and our look back on the festival (including the Broken Frontier Panel with Tillie Walden, Dave White of Avery Hill Publishing, Sanita Muižniece of kuš! comics and BF ‘Six to Watch’ artist Peony Gent) here.
Here’s that ELCAF press release in full…
Charlotte Dumortier is ELCAF 2018 artist in residence
Belgian illustrator Charlotte Dumortier joins ELCAF as our artist in residence 2018. Based in Antwerp, her work is characterised by bright colours and bold shapes. As well as being an illustrator, she also works as a motion graphics animator.
Charlotte makes comics for zines and anthologies and her “first real comic book” is called Murphy’s Miserable Space Adventures and is published by Oogachtend. She also makes mini comics and zines under the moniker yum yum zines with her friend Shamisa Debroey who will also be joining ELCAF 2018.
Alongside Charlotte, ELCAF is inviting an exciting roster of international artists including Patrick Kyle, Nina Cosco, Conor Stechschulte, Tor Brandt, Sammy Stein, Aisha Franz, Akvile Magicdust, Dawid Ryski and many, many more.
On 22, 23 & 24 June ELCAF will be open for another 3 full days of talks, workshops and screenings. Tickets will be available on 20 April 2018.
