Our Crowdfunding Corner feature is back again today as we continue to actively spotlight the more intriguing, exciting, experimental and daring uses of the form that we spot on the crowdfunding circuit. These are comics that both fit the Broken Frontier coverage ethos and that we think deserve your support and backing! Today’s subject is a genre comic with a socially conscious message. Check out what MechaTon #1 has to offer below…
MechaTon #1
The who and what: Giant robots! Mutant cockroaches! Outer space fascists! Just a few of the tantalising elements of this new science fantasy adventure series (especially if punching the latter is on the cards). When the mysterious MechaTon glove falls to Earth it ends up in the hands of siblings Derek and Leah who discover its power to transform objects into a Gundam-style robot. It’s a power they will need when a giant mutated cockroach shows up in their neighbourhood…
The series is written by Wells Thompson and Dalton Shannon, illustrated by Fernando Pinto, coloured by Mayday Trippe and lettered by Nathan Kempf.
What’s on offer: Outside of the usual print and digital copies extra rewards include signed editions, metallic covers and the unique offer of a guarded family recipe for lentil soup! That’s not something you see every day from a Kickstarter capaign.
Why you should back it: Apart from what looks like a fun bit of escapist fare MechaTon also features a diverse cast of characters and a socially conscious message. It’s impossible to feel indifferent to a crowdfunding campaign when its creators have this to say about their project:
We live in chaotic, scary times. Our culture discourages common people from building strong community bonds in favor of enriching an ever narrowing group of megalomaniacs. At its heart, MechaTon is a counterpoint–a story that encourages sharing what you have, working together, and lifting each other up. It’s also fun, kind, and optimistic, even in the face of overwhelming odds and societal pessimism.
In these uncertain times community is more important than ever and the message of MechaTon is one we can all get behind!
