And so it begins. Fieldmouse Press put out the kind of indie and alt work that will always appeal to the Broken Frontier audience and they have been hit hard this week, with their new season of books being the victim of Donald Trump’s destructive tariffs. Fieldmouse Press Launches GoFundMe Campaign to Cover Unexpected Tariffs
Support Independent Publishing During a Crucial Moment
Grass Valley, CA — Fieldmouse Press, an independent publisher dedicated to bringing diverse voices and powerful narratives to life, is calling on book lovers, supporters of independent publishing, and the wider arts community to help overcome an unexpected financial hurdle. Due to a sudden and steep increase in tariffs on all imported goods from China to the United States, the cost of bringing their Winter 2025 Season of books to readers has skyrocketed, putting the future of Fieldmouse Press and its subsidiary publication, SOLRAD, the literary magazine for comics, at risk.
To offset these unexpected costs, Fieldmouse Press has launched a GoFundMe Campaign with a goal of $10,000 to help pay the costs of tariffs and keep Fieldmouse Press solvent in the immediate future. The GoFundMe Campaign can be found at https://gofund.me/d0e92a0f.
Fieldmouse Press’ Publisher, Alex Hoffman, notes, “Our Winter 2025 Season has already been printed and is currently on a freightliner in the Pacific Ocean. We expect it to arrive in port in late April. We are now expected to pay an additional 54% tariff in order for those books to get released from customs and sent to our warehouse. As a small publisher, we do not have the financial reserves to absorb these additional costs, and we need the art community’s help to weather this storm.”
The funds raised by Fieldmouse Press’ GoFundMe will go directly towards covering the increased costs of paper, printing, and shipping that are a direct result of the new tariffs — expenses that have increased by up to 54%. Contributions will also help support independent artists who rely on fair royalties and the ability to see their books in print, as well as keeping books affordable and accessible for readers.
Alex Hoffman, in a statement, further noted, “We’ve been notified by our printer that our Winter 2025 season books are expected to reach American shores by late April. This means that time is of the essence.”
Fieldmouse Press is committed to publishing work by new and under-represented voices during a time when that commitment is needed more than ever. To keep that commitment, the support of the community has never been more vital.
