San Francisco-based micropublisher Laneha House recently launched a crowdfunding campaign on the Crowdfundr platform that takes a different approach to raising funds. For their new anthology Momo Cutie they’re looking to secure payment for each contributor in advance with an initial campaign target of $2,000 to give upfront funding for artist Gladys Ochoa‘s story ‘Pancho Claus’.
From the Crowdfundr page:
The first issue’s theme is From the Bay to LA. We are commissioning 10 4-page autobiographical comics from 10 Cartoonists born and or raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County. The anthology will be perfect bound and 8.5×11. Color Cover, B&W interior.
The experimental premise of Momo Cutie. Each artist will be paid, $500 a page. Each artist has 6 months to finish the 4 paged comic and additional funds from the print run, will go to 6 other artists for our Open Mic Project.
‘Pancho Claus’ is described as “a short story of meeting Santa’s southern cousin at a local mission community center event” and Ochoa’s work looks to use “tongue-in-cheek storytelling to dispel negative stereotypes and celebrate her Mexican/Salvadoran heritage.” Laneha House’s approach to DIY culture and small press publishing is always worth your time and this is an admirable initiative to ensure artists are paid in advance rather than long after they have completed their work. The perk of the campaign is to receive a digital copy of ‘Panch Claus’ in advance and pre-ordering Momo Cutie gets you a download of 20-plus Laneha House comics as a placeholder while you wait for the anthology.
