Press Release
The creative team that reinvented the modern superhero, bringing her into a larger, more complicated world launches its first Kickstarter. The 30-Day campaign to fund the first collection of Strong Female Protagonist begins Tuesday, May 20th, 2014, at 6:00 AM EST, and will end on Wednesday, June 18.
Written by Brennan Lee Mulligan, a house improvisor at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, and drawn by Molly Ostertag, a recent SVA graduate, Strong Female Protagonist is a critically acclaimed webcomic that’s been updating twice weekly since 2012. It’s the story of Alison Green—AKA Mega Girl—a middle-class American who has been blessed/cursed with super-strength, invincibility, and a crippling sense of social injustice.
“In the book we hope to produce, Alison deals with her past as a teenage superhero, goes to college, and tries to figure out how she can make a difference in a world where the problems are much greater than simply battling super villains,” says Mulligan. “It’s a story of superheroes, as seen through the lens of social justice.”
Funds received from the Kickstarter will go toward collecting the first four chapters of Strong Female Protagonist into a 220-page, black-and-white trade paperback, with a new color cover. Mulligan and Ostertag are hoping to raise $8,000 for their first print run. As rewards to their backers, they are offering PDFs of the comic, copies of the printed book, art prints, postcards with pictures by guest artists, T-shirts and more! The campaign will also offer stretch goals, including one that will add four new pages to the comic, exploring an aspect of the world of the comic to be voted on by backers.
Says Ostertag, “Strong Female Protagonist has been a labor of love for the past two years, and this is an exciting chance to take this project to the next level. We’re really excited to make this graphic novel and share our comic with more readers!”
